Environment and Sustainability

Facing the current climate crisis, the air transport industry is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and ensuring the sustainability of the sector. Airports in the region face the challenge of operating and designing sustainable infrastructure to accommodate projected growth. Airports face important challenges such as carbon emissions reduction, energy efficiency and the circular economy, while recognizing the importance of adapting to climate change.

In order to contribute to this industry effort, ACI has a number of programs to support its member airports such as the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program and the Green Airport Recognition.

The ACI-LAC Environment and Sustainability Committee is the working group responsible for developing collective airport positions on issues related to the environmental management and sustainability of the airport industry. In addition, this Committee promotes and highlights best practices in environmental management.

ACI Long-Term Carbon Goal

ACI and its members announced in June 2021 a long-term carbon emissions reduction target.

“Member airports worldwide commit to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and urge governments to provide the necessary support in this effort.”

The target recognizes the need to work with governments and other industry stakeholders so that airports can have the necessary support to enable them to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Combatting Wildlife Trafficking

Wildlife trafficking has been using aviation to carry out its illegal activities, causing serious environmental damage and effects similar to those of other international crimes, such as fostering instability, financing organized crime and negatively affecting communities that make a living from wildlife tourism.

ACI has participated in an industry working group to combat wildlife trafficking by gathering information and developing tools (including training and publications) to support airports in stopping this illicit trade.

ACI-World Environmental Committee

Works with experts, member airports and industry leaders to develop environmentally responsible policies that reflect the interests of airports. With participation from representatives from all five ACI regions, the committee ensures that new policies, initiatives and best practices are considered and shared with airport members around the world.

Airport Carbon and Emissions Reporting Tool (ACERT)

ACERT is a tool that allows airports to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and generate a comprehensive emissions inventory. This inventory can be used to apply for Carbon Footprint Accreditation – ACA.
